German nutrition expert Annette Saberski has warned against eating foods that contain food mites, which could lead to serious health problems such as allergies, skin diseases and digestive system. Disinfected food should be disposed of immediately.

Adhesive traps are not enough to fight the insect, which may come home with purchases such as rice, flour and spices, Sabersky said.

All reservoirs should be thoroughly cleaned by vinegar, as well as hard-to-reach areas such as cracks, by hot air to the hair dryer, in order to kill the larvae and existing eggs.

It is best to stay away from chemical control by insecticides, and instead resort to non-chemical repellents based on odors and essential oils such as lavender, cedar, mint and cloves to expel mites.
