Consumption of vitamins and supplements has increased in many parts of the world. Despite this, the old seafarer disease scurvy has reappeared in the western world. The disease, which occurs due to acute vitamin C deficiency, is estimated to have claimed about two million seafarers' lives between the 15th and 19th centuries.

Now about 30 new cases of the disease have been registered in the United States. But that is not because people have eaten too little, explains doctor Eric Churchill in the world of science.

- More than half of those we have diagnosed suffer from obesity. They get enough calories in themselves, but they are calories with poor nutritional value.
