It only takes an hour, then SVT's reporter has found several supplements in the trade that can be dangerous to health. It is about everything from fat burning and performance enhancing preparations to Ayurvedic natural medicine.

A diet supplement is said to be performance-enhancing and fat-reducing. It contains a combination of synephrine and caffeine that can damage the central nervous system and the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. It was forbidden to sell in a number of municipalities in 2016, but was still available for sale on an e-commerce site.

Another product is an Ayurvedic diet supplement that is said to alleviate urinary tract and digestive problems. In 2013, the product was banned from marketing, since it was discovered that the preparation contains high levels of lead, arsenic and mercury. These supplements were also for sale but were withdrawn from the store when SVT News contacted them.

Whether the preparation still contains excessive levels of harmful substances is unclear. SVT has not found any studies done later than 2013.

Another dietary supplement is said to enlarge the breasts and contains a substance that is banned from being sold within the EU. You could buy it on an e-commerce site that, according to the website, sells "high quality supplements".

Municipality: "Not surprised"

Dietary supplements are counted as food, and it is the municipalities' environmental administrations who are responsible for the supervision of dietary supplements.

If the municipality discovers a dangerous dietary supplement, it receives a local marketing ban, but can in practice continue to be sold in e-commerce and by other stores.

At the environmental management in Stockholm, they are not surprised that SVT's reporter found hazardous dietary supplements in the trade.

- That you found preparations that should not be there I am not at all surprised. We also do that in our control, says Daniel Persson, director of the Food Control at the Environmental Management in Stockholm.

"Food control only does sampling"

At the National Food Agency they think the system works, but are aware that dangerous products can be found on the market.

- The food inspection can only do a sample, and then it slips between things that should not be on the market, says Joakim Meuller Bäckman, state inspector at the Swedish Food Agency.

Several Swedish companies that have sold hazardous products have removed these from their range after SVT News contacted them.

The Indian company that makes the Ayurvedic preparation writes to SVT News that they are not aware of the sales ban. And that some heavy metals are necessary in Ayurvedic medicine to make it more effective. The company does not write what the high levels of 2013 are due to.
