In Chad, a state of emergency has been declared in two provinces in the east of the country. The decision was made by the head of state for the next three months, after deadly clashes between communities that killed dozens in August.

The two provinces of Sila and Ouaddai are on the border with Sudan. Conflicts between sedentary farmers and nomadic pastoralists are common in this transhumance zone. This time again, it is an incident between these two communities, the discovery of the bodies of two young breeders who set fire to the powder.

As a result, in less than 10 days, more than 50 civilians were killed. The visiting Chadian president promised to deploy the army to calm the situation. He also called for all civilians in the area to be disarmed, as the presence of weapons makes these community conflicts particularly deadly.

Weapons circulating through conflict-ridden border countries, such as neighboring Sudan, but also Libya and the Central African Republic. Finally, drought and demographic pressure also add to tensions.

For the time being, the two canton chiefs behind the clashes have been suspended. The population of these two provinces is no longer allowed to ride a motorcycle in the next three months.
