Donald Trump on Friday welcomed a "very good meeting" on Afghanistan with his closest advisers and ministers, ensuring that he will work with the Taliban on a peace deal to end the conflict that began in 2001.

"All just ended a very good meeting on Afghanistan, many in the opposite camp of this 19-year-old war, and ourselves, are considering an agreement - if possible!", The US president tweeted.

The White House had reported a few minutes ago progress in preparing a peace deal with the Taliban, also saying that the talks between Donald Trump and his key advisers and ministers had "gone" very well.

The US President has been speaking from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, with several senior officials including Defense Minister Mark Esper, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Chief of Staff. General Joseph Dunford.

"The talks focused on the ongoing negotiations and a possible peace and reconciliation agreement with the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan, the meeting went very well and negotiations are continuing," said a statement. Hogan Gidley, deputy spokeswoman for the White House.

"In close and continuous cooperation with the Government of Afghanistan, we remain committed to reaching a comprehensive peace agreement, including a reduction of violence and a ceasefire," said Mike Pompeo in a statement.

Also present at the meeting, according to Foreign Minister Mike Pence, National Security Adviser John Bolton, US envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, and CIA Director Gina, said the head of diplomacy. Haspel.

This meeting comes just days after the conclusion of the latest round of talks between the United States and the Taliban in Doha.

Several US sources have been suggesting in recent days that an agreement between Washington and the Taliban may be imminent, but some issues remain to be resolved and Zalmay Khalilzad may return to the region in the coming days to continue or even finalize negotiations.

He said at the end of the last talks that the negotiating teams had focused "on technical details" and had been "productive".

Americans and Taliban started direct talks a year ago.

Washington wants to reduce the US military presence in Afghanistan, where 14,000 US troops are deployed.

The United States is mainly trying to put an end to an expensive war that began in 2001. Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he wants to "bring the guys back home".
