17 August 2019When the people injured in the explosion at the Russian Far North military base arrived at the Arkhangelsk hospital, the doctors "were not informed that the patients were radioactive", "no one told them to protect themselves".

This was stated by one of the facility's surgeons, interviewed by the Moscow Times.

After the outbreak, the level of radioactivity in the region had risen 20 times compared to normal. The newspaper writes that "the Russian authorities are keeping the circumstances of the explosion shrouded in mystery", adding that "the answer to the fact recalls the behavior after Chernobyl".

Hospital doctors, speaking anonymously, also reported that the specialists who treated the wounded in the explosion received a request from the FSB services to sign confidentiality agreements, which prevent them from talking about what happened. They specified that they were not forced to sign, but that "a few" did not.

One of the doctors also said that hospital staff were "furious" at the lack of information that could harm people. In addition, one of the hospital's doctors carried out radioactivity tests and he was found to have Cesium-137 contamination in muscle tissues. A circumstance that was later denied by an official note from the Ministry of Health.
