17 August 20197.40 According to the New York Times, the United States and the Taliban will soon announce an agreement to launch direct talks between militants and the Kabul government, in order to define a road map for the inclusion of the Taliban in the Afghan government. The agreement would provide for a first withdrawal of about 5,000 of the 14,000 US military in the country. In exchange, the Taliban would undertake not to support al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and to prevent the two terrorist organizations from operating in areas under their control.
