The "flygskam" (the "shame" of flying) sees more and more travelers leave the plane, too polluting, too CO2 emitting, and travel less, for environmental reasons. The figures released this summer by Swedavia, the company that manages the top ten Swedish airports, confirm that this trend is not anecdotal.

With our correspondent in Stockholm, Frédéric Faux

This is called a descent in free fall. In July this year, the number of passengers who transited the ten largest Swedish airports by domestic flights dropped by 11% compared to July 2018. If we take as a reference the period that will from January to July, the drop was already ... 8%.

" Shame " to fly

This is a concrete illustration of flygskam , the "shame" of flying for environmental reasons. This trend, which largely benefits the train, has become established among the Swedes, who are very sensitive to climate change and its consequences. Swedavia, which manages these airports, emphasizes that flying in Sweden will become less polluting.

A flygskam watched with attention

By 2020, airport facilities will all be carbon neutral. In 2025, this will also be the case for 5% of the fuel supplied to airlines. Will it encourage Swedes to fly back? We do not know it yet. But what is happening in the northern kingdom is watched with attention ... by the entire aviation industry!
