The UN Security Council has held a closed-door session on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the first of its kind in nearly 50 years, to discuss India's decision to abolish self-rule in the part of Kashmir.

The Security Council last met to discuss the situation in the Himalayan region of Kashmir in 1965.

The Chinese delegate to the Security Council that India's move has caused tensions in the region, noting that his country does not recognize it, but New Delhi reiterated that Kashmir is an internal issue and should not be the subject of international intervention.

In Washington, the White House said US President Donald Trump, in a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, stressed the importance of reducing tensions between India and Pakistan in Kashmir through dialogue.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said that Imran Khan expressed to Trump during the phone call concerns about the deterioration of the situation in Kashmir.

According to an official statement that Khan briefed the US President on the developments in Kashmir, and specifically what the Indian practices pose a threat to security and stability in the region, as described in the statement.

The statement added that Imran Khan also briefed Trump on the atmosphere of the consultative session of the UN Security Council on the subject.

The Pakistani prime minister stepped up his attack on the Indian government after its recent decisions on Jammu and Kashmir, describing the government as "fascism and racism."

Imran Khan, in two tweets on his Twitter account Friday morning, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government of "fascist Hindu racism should know that while armies, militants and terrorists can be defeated by superior forces, history tells us that when a nation unites and fights for freedom and does not fear death "No force can prevent it from achieving its goal."

"That is why the exclusionary doctrine of the Modi government, which seeks to consolidate Hindus' hegemony, with its fascist methods in Jammu and Kashmir, will fail miserably in its attempt to quell the Kashmiri struggle for freedom," he said in a second tweet.

In contrast, the Supreme Court of India postponed a petition challenging the strict restrictions imposed by the Indian government in the region. Another lawsuit on the constitutionality of the abolition of state autonomy was postponed by the abolition of a constitutional provision by the government, a move taken without the approval of the Jammu and Kashmir state parliament.

New Delhi announced on August 5 that it would abolish Article 370 of the Constitution, which gives autonomy to the so-called state of Jammu and Kashmir (Indian part of the region), prompting Islamabad to expel the Indian ambassador and suspend bilateral trade agreements.

Indian authorities have cut off telephone calls, Internet and television broadcasts in Kashmir and imposed restrictions on movement and assembly.

Muslim-majority Kashmir has been demanding independence from India and joining Pakistan since the two countries gained independence from Britain in 1947. The conflict over the region has led to two of three wars between the two arch-rivals.
