Norway announced yesterday the blocking of 30 million euros of subsidies to Brazil, through the fund of protection of the Amazon rainforest. Each year, Brazil receives subsidies according to its results in the fight against deforestation.

Norway has decided to close the taps on the grounds that the country led by Jair Bolsonaro " no longer wants to stop deforestation ". Norway believes that Brasilia has " broken the agreement " with donors of the Amazon rainforest conservation fund.

It is the decision of the Brazilian government at the end of June to suspend the board of directors and the technical committee of this fund for the Amazon which led to this decision of the Norwegians. Norway is the main provider of this fund, with nearly 830 million euros paid since its creation in 2008.

Deforestation accelerates in the Amazon

Since Jair Bolsonaro came to power in January, deforestation is accelerating in favor of a policy of agricultural expansion. Openly climate-skeptical, the Brazilian president believes that laws protecting the Amazon rainforest hinder the economic development of his country.

In July, deforestation was much higher than last year at the same time. Hence the Norwegian decision to block the payment of 30 million euros of subsidies.

On Saturday, August 10, Germany also decided to retain 35 million euros until the figures of deforestation become encouraging again. Jair Bolsonaro reacted by saying that Norway, which " kills whales at the North Pole ," has no lessons to teach Brazil.
