During the spring, the National Forensic Center (NFC) carried out a project where images of suspected, unknown perpetrators in ongoing preliminary investigations were compared to people in the police's sign-up register.

A computer system sells in the register, but it is ultimately a forensic scientist who makes the assessment if a suspected perpetrator has been found.

In 79 ongoing investigations, NFC found 22 suspected offenders.

- It was surprisingly high frequency where we got a potential candidate, says imaging forecaster Elisabet Leitet to the radio.

"You can investigate multiple crimes"

Now we hope to be able to continue with the working method as it saves time compared to today's manual searches.

- There is a potential for investigating multiple crimes. Otherwise, these crimes would have no suspect person. One would not get anywhere in the preliminary investigation and it would just be closed down, says Leitet.

There are currently more than 50,000 searchable images in the police signaling register. In order for NFC to continue with the work, permission from the Data Inspectorate is required.
