The future of Åkeboskolen has been in a politically hot potato in Borgholm municipality. During the year, a political decision was made that the old parts of the school would be demolished and that new premises would be ready by 2021.

During Tuesday evening, a steering group meeting was held to start the project, among other things, tender documents were prepared. Five hours later, the alarm came that the premises that were to be demolished were in flames.

- I did not think it was true when the fire started, it is a very sick coincidence, says Ilko Corkovic (S), municipal council in Borgholm.

Old premises that were burning

It is the old part of the school, built in 1967, that was to be demolished according to the municipality's plan, and it is the part that has now burned down.

It has not yet been determined what caused the fire, but one of the theories is that a lightning strike may have been behind. The police have therefore initiated a preliminary investigation to rule out that the cause of the fire is not due to anything else.

"Natural explanation"

The hope is that the insurance will cover the values that were destroyed in the fire. There is no concern that anyone should have turned on to get rid of insurance money is not with Ilko Corkovic.

- There is strong evidence that the fire has a natural explanation. Our hope is to receive compensation for the values that were destroyed, not to receive money for the planned new building, says Ilko Corkovic.

A claim was submitted on Wednesday and a meeting between the municipality and the insurance company is scheduled for Friday.
