An 82-year-old man in Hiroshima has been confirmed dead by local authorities after falling into the sea while trying to moor his boat.

At least 34 people have been injured, according to the Japanese broadcaster NHK. Dramatic TV images show violent sea waves as well as wind-fallen trees and lampposts.

Around 550,000 people are invited to leave their homes in a voluntary evacuation order from the authorities. The storm is moving just off the country's southwestern coast with gusts of 44 meters per second.

More than 600 flights canceled

A company of 18 people has been evacuated to a higher location after being stranded in a place where the water rose rapidly.

The storm arrives at the same time as many are on their way home after the traditional summer vacation obon. More than 600 domestic flights have been canceled and the number of express train departures has been sharply reduced. Several ferries have also been canceled due to high waves.

Krosa is moving at a slow pace, 20 kilometers per hour, so the rain over the affected area is expected to continue for a long time.
