He warned against the execution of his father, saying that such a step would be an assassination committed by the state and could not be allowed to escape.

He stated that his father had suffered ill-treatment by being held in solitary confinement, handcuffed, blindfolded and chained in a cell, and deprived of sleep and medication.

He confirmed that 17 family members were prevented from traveling, his uncle Khaled, who published a tweet about his father, was arrested and the embassy in Washington asked him to go to the kingdom to "renew my passport" which was frozen.

Sheikh al-Odah told his family when he visited him six months after his arrest about the cruel treatment he suffered in his prison, including the occasional deprivation of sleep and food, as well as the signing of documents he did not know.

The authorities arrested Sheikh on September 10, 2017 as part of a campaign of arrests involving a number of scholars and writers, shortly after a post in which he called on God to "create hearts" on the back of reports of possible reconciliation between the Gulf crisis that erupted after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt announced a cut.
