According to the rescue service, the fire started in the eastern wing of the upper part of Åkerboskolan in Löttorp.

- When we arrived at the site it was smoky in the wind and we went in with smoke divers and found that the ceiling had collapsed, so we had to back out, says Roger Svensson, force leader on site to SVT News Småland.

Got demolished classroom

The risk of spreading was great and the rescue services had to make a quick decision to stop the fire: Demolish one of the classrooms.

- We took the excavators that we had and dug off so we saved two classrooms and the kitchen, and created fire streets, says Rickard Andersson, partner in Löttorp's concrete and haulage, the local company that was allowed to move in.

Retrieved water from the bath house

Thanks to the 10 meter wide fire street that was excavated, the rescue service was also able to obtain water transport from neighboring Åkerbobadets outdoor pools.

Ilko Corkovic (S), municipal council in Borgholm, on Wednesday morning wanted to send a thank you to the rescue personnel.

- I want to send a huge thank you to the rescue service. They have been working all night, and I saw for myself how they saved the library. It's a feat and a fantastic effort, he says.

Thunderstorms can be the cause

It has not yet been determined what caused the fire, but one of the theories is that a lightning strike may have started the fire.

- It was a bang an hour earlier, but then if that is what caused the fire we do not know yet, says Roger Svensson, force leader.
