Only a year ago, meat sales in the larger grocery stores in Eskilstuna were most common. But in recent months, several smaller stores selling meat have opened and this results in more checks from the food unit.

Larger quantities of meat are purchased

What distinguishes the smaller meat stores from the larger food chains is that a larger quantity of meat is bought and sold in periods.

- Meat is a very big risk and there is a lot that can go wrong. There are additional factors that make it easy for people to get sick or cheat in different ways. That's why we choose to focus extra on that particular point, says Johan Hoffstedt, environmental inspector in the municipality of Eskilstuna.

Should reduce the risk of infection

And in the checks that are made, there are some deviations that the businesses must correct. Recently, the inspectors disposed of old meat from a store. But the deviations are also about hygiene risks.

- It is about how to reduce the risk of contamination, so that viruses and bacteria do not spread to the meat from, for example, mobile phones. Likewise how the room is designed, it should be clean and nice. Something we also look at a lot is traceability, where does the meat come from and how it is stored, says Johan Hoffstedt.
