August 14, 2019The two prison guards who were to watch over Jeffrey Epstein the night before the suicide fell asleep leaving the financier's cell with no checks for at least three hours. The agents then falsified the report to hide their mistake. This was reported by the New York Times, citing investigative sources after two Manhattan federal prison officers were removed and put on leave.

The two guards had to check Epstein every 30 minutes, but according to the New York Times source the procedure was not followed and having falsified the register could constitute a federal crime. One of the two persons assigned to the surveillance task in the Unit 9 of the detention center where Epstein was held did not usually work in the facility, and its role was not clarified yet.
