The coal mine of War (West Virginia). Anne Corpet / RFI

His administration has just announced the abolition of an environmental law, set up by Barack Obama. The new measure should allow the opening of new coal plants ... But about twenty states and cities have decided to go to court to block the decision of the US President.

With our correspondent in New York, Loubna Anaki

This is another battle in the war that some states are waging against Donald Trump's policies. California, Colorado, New York or Los Angeles, in total, 29 states and cities have decided to file a complaint.

In question, this decision by the Trump administration to cancel one of the flagship measures of the Obama era for the protection of the environment. The Clean Power Plan aimed to speed up the closure of coal plants, starting with the oldest and most polluting ones. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2022 and encourage renewable energy.

The new law provided by Donald Trump does not set a ceiling for gaseous pollutants, and drastically reduces restrictions for the construction of new coal plants.

At the head of the resistance movement, the governor of California believes that " President Trump serves the interests of lobbies and completely neglects the future of future generations ."

Donald Trump has never hidden from it. He does not believe in global warming and is not a strong supporter of the environment. He withdrew from the Paris Agreement, repealed several measures put in place by Barack Obama.
Yesterday again, during a visit to an oil field, the US president praised coal as ensuring it was a much more reliable source of energy.
