A small step for an astronaut, but a great step for electronic music. The Italian Luca Parmitano this morning became the first space DJ in history. The astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA) directed a session from the International Space Station for more than 2,000 young people docked at a disco cruise in the port of Ibiza.

After 23 hours, and 420 kilometers from the earth's surface , Parmitano tried to put the ship's occupants into orbit with his music, for just nine minutes, the time it took for the Space Station to briefly cross the South Pacific Road to the north of the United States. It should be remembered that the Station completes a return to earth every 92 minutes.

The young people, mostly of German nationality, danced to the sound of the astronaut while raising small inflatable aliens that the organizers had distributed.

The truth is that until recently, Parmitano, 42, had no idea of electronic music . ESA's engineer and sponsor, Emmet Fletchet, defined Luca as "a very enthusiastic person," who "always wants to go further and try new things."

Therefore, to perform this activity, a music program has been downloaded on a tablet of the Space Station itself; and received some training in January from the German DJ Le Shuuk , who also made available to the astronaut some themes for his set.

Just connect, the Italian recalled the interview made by a psychologist to be an astronaut. Apparently they asked him what would change the world if he could change only one, and he replied to end the language barrier, and that all people speak the same language . Then he recalled that "mathematics and music" are universal languages, and this experience of playing from the Station implies joining both: "The language of mathematics, science and engineering, with the language of music, involving the young people in what we do up here and why it is so important ».

Luca Parmitano, last night, in the middle of his session.

During her brief session, Luca danced what she could in her small cabin, walked sideways, clapped her hands upside down , and even dropped the tablet and floated it through the Space Station to the delight of clubbers.

ESA has turned to this project, whose objective was "to reach a community of young people who, for the most part, would not be interested in space," French astronaut Jean-François Clervoy explained to the French agency AFP. "This is how we bring space to Ibiza," he said.

In an interview with World Club Dome, promoter of the cruise and the event, Luca explained that his intention with this activity was also for young people to realize the "importance of leaving the comfort zone and exploring," as an example from someone "who tries something different, who doesn't know."

Electronic music and parties in the boat pools is what unites these young people who left Barcelona last Monday, yesterday they were in Ibiza, and today they will go to the French port of Sete, to finish the trip again the next day in Barcelona. Some of the world's most important DJs, such as Dimitri Vegas or Robin Schulz , travel with them.

Although the Italian astronaut will go down in history as the first space dj, the truth is that it is not the first time that astronauts play music or even play instruments from the Station, where ESA assures there are currently two guitars, a keyboard and a saxophone .

From ESA they have also wanted to make it very clear that Parmitano will carry out this activity "in his spare time", and prevent anyone from doubting the scientific work of the Station.

The Italian astronaut has been at the Space Station since July 21, where he arrived in just six hours after being launched from Kazakhstan aboard the Soyuz MS-13.

For six months, reports the European Agency, Luca will carry out more than 250 experiments , such as studies on how microgravity affects the human body, or the handling of robots by remote control during a lunar exploration.

When astronaut Alexei Ovchinin leaves the ISS at the end of Expedition 60, Luca will take command of the station, starting Expedition 61 . This will be the third time a European astronaut and the first time an ESA Italian astronaut will assume this role.
