According to him, the situation around the USA and Iran poses a serious threat to European and world stability.

“The dangerous impulse between the United States and Iran provoked a series of incidents at sea, from Gibraltar to the Strait of Hormuz ... We must join forces to avoid a dangerous confrontation and lay the foundations for a new dialogue that will resume the 2015 nuclear agreement,” Borrel said in an interview with El Pais.

He stressed that it is important for the EU not to be between the "maximum pressure" of the United States and the "maximum resistance" of Iran.

“The EU may be held hostage to the dynamics of the conflict, which does not serve its interests and does not ensure the fulfillment of our main goals: Iran without access to nuclear weapons and with the potential for negotiation,” the representative of the Spanish Foreign Ministry said.

Borrel called on European countries to protect their interests, despite the “external impositions” and “cool the hot spots and the possibility of war”, which will solve the problems in the region.

In his view, Europe also needs to continue to work on “promoting legitimate trade”.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the international community to increase pressure on Tehran to end its "destabilizing behavior."

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif, in turn, noted that Washington’s active arms trade turned the Persian Gulf into a powder keg.
