Today it has been a year since hundreds of cars were fire-ridden in several areas in Gothenburg as well as in Trollhättan and Lysekil in Western Sweden, which is also noticed by GPs.

The fires were then believed to be coordinated and it all happened a month before the election, which led to a great debate where the leading politicians tried to outdo each other in showing purposefulness in what was described as an organized attack on society.

The event also attracted considerable attention in international media, which focused on its importance for the Swedish elections. But since then, both prosecutors and police have said it was likely an incident staged by criminals, as a protest against police disturbing the gang's criminal activities in the areas.

Unclear relationship

But whether there was coordination between the different fires, there is still no sure answer to this day.

- We have not been able to prove any connection. But what I think is another matter, says prosecutor Mats Ihlbom.

In Gothenburg it also burned in the Bergsjön and Hjällbo the same evening.

- Actually, I should not speculate, but my theory is that the fires in Gothenburg were coordinated, but not in other cities, says Mats Ihlbom.

But it will not be proven at this time. Those who will soon - within a few weeks - be prosecuted are people whom Ihlbom claims were involved in the car fires in Frölunda.

- I think there are other heavier criminals behind but because nobody talks, I can't prove it, he says.

Criminals wanted to shift their focus

The question of evidence is also problematic with regard to the subject.

- What I can say is that there are no political motives. These are criminals who want to shift their focus from their operations, especially drug sales. It is a kind of protest against the authorities' actions, says Mats Ihlbom.

But neither can it be coated.

- No, there is no evidence to prove.

However, Mats Ihlbom believes that he will be able to convince the district court that the people, who are between 16 and 21 years old, have been on fire with cars in Frölunda.
