When a train is stopped or delayed, the person who caused the disturbance must pay a quality fee, a kind of penalty fee. Both the train companies that run the trains and the Swedish Transport Administration, which is responsible for, for example, tracks and traffic management, may be required to pay the fee if they have caused interruptions in train traffic.

Among the passenger train companies, the largest company, SJ, is, unsurprisingly, the operator that paid the most fees during the first half of this year. The sum lands at SEK 9.2 million.

A small sum for such a large operator, and in addition, the company again gets a lot of money because the Swedish Transport Administration pays money to SJ when the fault lay with them - for example if there was some fault on the railway, such as a demolished contact line or a frozen switch.

Two on the list are Tågkompaniet AB (now Vy Tåg AB), which mainly runs local traffic in Gävleborg, Norrbotten, Värmland and Jönköping.

Kalmar county traffic stands out

One company that stands out on the list is the relatively small company Kalmar county traffic that has been hit by many canceled trains.

Part of the explanation is Kustpilen, a diesel-powered rail bus that operates Kalmar-Linköping and Västervik-Linköping. First, the rails are in poor condition, but even the trains themselves have had problems with defects.

Only on the Västerviks stretch was canceled about every fifth train last year.

Paid more penalties than SJ

For 2017, Kalmar had 2,707 quality fees to pay for canceled trains. Comparing to the whole SJ who only had to pay 2,151 times for trains to be canceled.

Several hundred fees separate the giant against the minimum, that is.

The same train creates problems in Jönköping

Jönköping County traffic has also been high when it comes to canceled departures with the Krösatåget. Then it was about the route that is operated by the same type of diesel train as the Coastal Arrow in Kalmar.

During the first half of this year, however, the statistics have improved for Jönköping county traffic, compared with previous years.
