British home delivery company Deliveroo announced on Monday (August 12th) that it was leaving Europe's biggest European market on Friday.

With our correspondent in Berlin, Pascal Thibaut

" We would like to thank all the deliverers and restaurants who worked with Deliveroo in Germany as well as our customers ". The decision on the home delivery platform arrived unannounced on Monday. The last orders can be placed Friday, August 16th.

Conflicting signals

Deliveroo is pulling out of the German market to focus on other markets in Europe or Asia deemed more profitable. The British company had issued contradictory signals in recent months. Last autumn, she announced that she would concentrate her activities in five major German cities in the future.

In the spring, after massive financial support from the giant Amazon, Deliveroo was planning a strong comeback this fall before the announcement on Monday of a shutdown in Germany.

One hundred employees of the company are concerned as well as a thousand deliverymen with an independent status. Compensation will be offered to them in proportion to their turnover of the last months. The NGG union, which is very critical of working conditions in this industry, said in substance that Deliveroo's decision left him cold.

Competitors rejoice

The disappearance of the company from the German market should delight the leader in this market. The Dutch company Takeaway owns several companies, including Lieferando. These companies do not use their own delivery men but only work with restaurants that manage the service themselves.
