The transport authority of Vienna announced Monday give up spreading different fragances in its subway, this measure having been far from consensus among users after a test period.

Lemon and grapefruit for "energy", sandalwood for "good mood", rose and melon for "relaxation": Wiener Linien had experimentally broadcast a whole range of smells in two subway lines in July.

But after a month of testing, the verdict of users fell and "a majority voted against" this initiative, by 21,000 votes against 16,000 in an online consultation, recognized the municipality, which said that the experience would stay there.

In fact, it appears that "Viennese and Viennese are satisfied with the smell of the metro," noted Wiener Linien, who said he was constantly looking for innovative ideas to promote public transport, which "bring a decisive contribution to climate protection ".

Last year, the authority had successfully imposed a ban on eating in the subway, many users have complained about the frequency of smells of pizza or kebab in the trains.

Globally renowned for its cleanliness and reliability, Vienna's urban transport network is used daily by 2.6 million users.

Nearly half of the 1.9 million inhabitants (822,000 users) of the Austrian capital have an annual transport card, sales of which have soared after the municipality on the left lowered its price to 365 euros in 2012. The number of annual cards has thus exceeded that of cars in the capital.
