• Accusation: Juan Guaidó denounces that Nicolás Maduro intends to "dissolve Parliament"
  • Marches: Chavismo shakes social networks with its protest 'No more Trump' over the US blockade

Stunned by the new sanctions of the United States and with one foot out of the negotiation sponsored by Norway, Chavism prepares a counterattack with its almighty Constituent Assembly: remove parliamentary immunity from more opposition deputies - for allegedly backing the executive order of the US president Donald Trump - and call early parliamentary elections, to try to take that space away from the opposition.

The complaint was made by the head of parliament, Juan Guaidó, without giving further details and assuring that, if Chavism decides to attack, an escalation of the political conflict would come, with protests in the streets and more international pressure.

" They intend to close and dissolve the Parliament, in addition to calling illegal elections , and continuing to pursue the deputies. If they do what they intend to do, then we will have a phase of superior conflict. Do not doubt that there will be an answer with our people, with the Force Armada, with the international community, "said the leader in his social networks, recognized as president in charge of Venezuela by more than 50 countries.

Chavismo has evaluated the new legislative elections in March 2020, said a source of the ruling Socialist Party under anonymity. However, he clarified that he does not know if the Constituent would make that decision immediately.

The parliamentary elections should be held at the end of 2020, when the five-year period of the Parliament is completed , and the new deputies should start functions in January 2021.

Improving electoral conditions, changing the National Electoral Council and accepting international observation has been one of the main demands of Guaidó representatives in talks with the Maduro regime on the island of Barbados.

Chavismo's decision would be driven by a ruling from the highest court, which in practice functions as the judicial arm of Maduro, and that this year has ordered the Constituent to snatch parliamentary immunity from 14 deputies for "treason" ; several of them are hidden, exiled and imprisoned, such as Vice President of Parliament Edgar Zambrano.

Today at noon the Plenary Hall of the Supreme met, a judge who participated in the meeting confirmed to EL MUNDO, although the decision is still unknown.

Guaidó said he already warned the international community about the possible red onslaught and that "members of the Venezuelan military sector are concerned about this measure."

"Every time the regime has taken a measure like this it has failed to stop the fight and has only managed to increase the pressure against it," he added.

The political scientist Francine Jácome believes that the threats of Chavismo can be a "normal pulse" to put pressure on the negotiation process , where Maduro's regime has demanded that all sanctions be removed in order to move forward.

"If the threats materialize, it could be the end of the talks, although the Norwegian Government must be very active. There must be many conversations at this time and even since last week," Jácome said.

Conversations on hold

The internationalist Marino De Alba sees as a possible scenario a freeze in the negotiations suspended by Nicolás Maduro. "If the threat of the Constituent Assembly is concretized, the talks in Barbados would deepen its pause situation and consequently there will be greater measures of international pressure," he said.

The vice president of Parliament, Stalin González, representative of Guaidó in the process, pointed out that until now there is no new date to sit down and continue with the negotiation process with the government. Of course, said the opposition is still in contact with the facilitators.

"They stopped for fear. They stop because we had already entered deep water. There was a proposal on the table. Our delegation is going to be where it has to be so that in the framework of the Constitution there is an agreement that ends the suffering of Venezuelans, "Gonzalez said.

The parliamentarian affirmed that the ANC has only served to persecute the opponents and that it only meets to break the immunity of some deputy but not to give solutions to the crisis in the country that, he says, will be aggravated "with the decisions he intends to give regime " .
