2018 - The US space agency Nasa launches a probe to fly through the extremely hot solar atmosphere for the first time. The "Parker Solar Probe" is expected to approach the sun to about 6.2 million kilometers.
2017 - After brawling a racist demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia, a man drives his car into a group of people and kills a 32-year-old.
2014 - Heavy armed men raid a cash-in-transit vehicle at Santiago de Chile airport and collect six billion pesos (7.8 million euros) to be loaded onto a plane.
2009 - In Central Hesse, a Roman horse's head is found during excavations. According to experts, it is as important as the Nebra Sky Disc and the Celtic Prince of Glauberg.
2002 - In Zinnwald-Georgenfeld in the eastern Erzgebirge, 312 liters of rain per square meter fall within 24 hours, never before had precipitation been measured in Germany in one day.
1949 - The Geneva Conventions for the Protection of the Civilian Population and Victims of War are signed. These "Geneva Conventions" come into force on October 21, 1950.
1944 - In the Italian mountain village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema in Tuscany, hundreds of civilians are murdered by members of an SS Panzer Grenadier Division. 560 people die in the massacre, including many women and children.
