The forest fire declared on Saturday in the Gran Canaria municipality of Artenara has passed overnight at a level 2 situation and the Government of the Canary Islands has assumed the direction of the emergency, under the Canarian Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Fire Response Forestry (Infoca), as reported by the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (Cecoes) 1-1-2.

The fire, which originated around 12.10 pm in the Las Peñas Juncalillo site due to the negligence of a Telde neighbor, who has already been arrested, affects the municipalities of Tejeda, Artenara and Gáldar. As a preventive measure, some 400 neighbors from a dozen neighborhoods near the fire were evacuated to municipal facilities and shelters for the night.

During the morning , 10 aerial means will be incorporated to the different tasks of extinguishing the fire. Nine helicopters from different administrations (State, Government of the Canary Islands and Cabildo de Gran Canaria) and an airplane will participate. They also continue to work terrestrial means, to which the Military Emergency Unit (UME) was added last night.

The night reactivation of the Artenara fire has raised the affected area to 900 hectares, according to the estimate of the Direction of Extinction of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. The flanks move towards the Tejeda Basin and the Pinar de Tamadaba.

The following roads remain closed: GC-210, Tejeda a Artenara, from kilometer point 0 to 6; GC-21, Crossing of the Garages to Artenara, from kilometer 32 to 39, and GC-150, Cruz de Tejeda to Pinos de Gáldar, between kilometer points 5.5 to 12.3. The Cabildo also recommends not exceeding the Caideros area on the GC-220.
