N1 French Gael Monfils has dropped out of the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, where he was scheduled to face Rafael Nadal in the semifinal with an ankle injury, the organizers said.

"Due to an injury, Gael Monfils must withdraw from the tournament," said the organization of the Canadian competition.

The French N.1 beat Spanish Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (N.13) 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/2) on Saturday afternoon after a quarter-final started on Friday night. but quickly postponed to the next day because of the rain.

Monfils should have started his semifinal against Nadal, N.2 world, nearly two hours after his quarter-final victory.

Against Bautista Agut, from the second set, the Parisian had shown signs of pain, regularly touching his left ankle. A sprain contracted before Wimbledon had reduced him to the point of giving up in full match in the first round of the tournament in London, five weeks ago.

Asked after his victory over his form before facing Nadal, Monfils had cast doubt: "Honestly, I do not know, I'll talk to my team, it was a tough match, I hurt myself a bit, we'll see what happens. "

"I do not know how my ankle goes," said the 32-year-old.
