A large forest fire broke out in the mountains of the Spanish holiday island of Gran Canaria. The municipalities of Tejeda, Artenara and Gáldar were particularly affected. At least 450 people have been brought to safety, the emergency services of the Canary Islands know on Sunday.

The fire brigade tries to extinguish the fire with the help of planes and helicopters. The emergency services estimate the affected area on approximately 900 hectares.

The fire broke out at Artenara on Saturday and has since spread further. The strong smoke development was also visible on the neighboring island of Tenerife.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
