WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein was found dead on Saturday in his New York cell where he was awaiting trial on charges of sexually abusing minors, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Justice opened investigations into what appeared to be a suicide.

"The staff immediately attempted to revive him," the prison administration said, before being taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, announcing an investigation into the incident.

US Attorney General William Barr said he was "shocked" by Epstein's death, "which raises serious questions."

Charges
On July 8, Jeffrey Epstein was charged with the sexual exploitation of minors and conspiracy to engage in sexual trafficking of minors, charges up to 45 years in prison.Police documents say he used to trade minors, subject them to sexual slavery, and present them to rich figures of the world.

The new federal indictment also focused on examining Epstein's relationship with a group of prominent figures in government, politics, business, academia, science and fashion for years.

They included US President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and British Prince Andrew Duke of York.

Investigators revealed that Jeffrey had an expired Saudi passport in the 1980s, so the court decided not to release him for fear of fleeing to Saudi Arabia.

Ten years ago, Epstein was accused of using illegal services to dozens of minors at his Florida home, and received a reduced prison sentence after reaching an agreement with prosecutors protecting him from further investigation.

Under the agreement, Epstein admitted that he was convicted of arranging sexual encounters between his agents and underage girls. He remained in jail for 13 months, and enjoyed reduced conditions in prison for part of the period.

The deal was approved by Alexander Costa as Florida's attorney general at the time, and Costa resigned as Trump administration secretary after new charges against Epstein emerged.

The mayor of New York, Bill de Palacio, continued to seek to uncover the circumstances of the sex scandal that has inflicted Epstein, who may have committed suicide in his prison because of it, vowing all those involved with him to hold accountable.

"Jeffrey Epstein may have escaped from court, but if the affluent monsters who shared him in the sex circle imagined that they would get away with it, they were wrong," de Palacio wrote on his Twitter account, and he promised the victims justice.

Democrat Alexandra Ocazio Cortez demanded on Twitter "answers to what happened, a lot of answers."

Former Justice Department inspector Michael Bromwich said the department should immediately open a "thorough investigation" to determine who was responsible for Epstein's death.
