More than 450 firefighters and 23 aircraft were mobilized throughout the country to fight these fires, one of which was raging on the island of Elafonissos and two around Marathon, near Athens. A campsite and a hotel were evacuated on the island of Elafonissos as well as a summer camp near Marathon, the official press agency ANA said.

40 degrees expected Sunday

Marathon is a short distance from the resort of Mati, where 102 people died in 2018 in the most deadly fire in Greece. The thermometer is expected to climb to 40 degrees on Sunday in some areas, where there should also be a strong wind.

On Friday, Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias, who placed emergency services at a high level of alert, said it was the first time since 2012 that Greece faced such a dangerous combination of hot temperatures, strong winds and drought.
