Golf legend Tiger Woods threw in the towel before he entered the second round of the Northern Trust on Friday, due to a gene in the abdomen, three weeks after his failed British Open.

"Due to a slight oblique tension that has resulted in pain and stiffness, I have to withdraw from the Northern Trust," said the 5th world player. "I went for treatment early Friday morning but, unfortunately, I still can not compete," he added.

Northern Trust, New Jersey (USA), was his first appearance since the British Open in July, when he missed the cut.

Thursday, for the first day of competition, "the Tiger" had greatly suffered, making a card of 75, 13 shots of the leader, the American Troy Merritt. Before giving up, Woods was in 116th out of 120.

"I hope to be able to participate in the BMW Championship next week," said the former N.1 after his package.

The 43-year-old is struggling to regain the form he needed to win the Masters in April, after 11 years without a win in one of the four major tournaments.

Woods only needs a victory on the PGA circuit to match Sam Snead's record of 82 successes.
