In the United States, while Democratic politicians hastened to pay homage to Toni Morrison on the Republican side, it is radio silence. Dead on August 6, Toni Morrison was the first African-American to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Donald Trump's lack of reaction does not go unnoticed, even if it is in tune with the Republican political class. It must be said that the novelist had clearly taken a stand against the current president of the United States just after his election.

She was the link between his rhetoric and the rise of white nationalism. A link that is currently at the center of the American political debate, a few days after the killings in Dayton and especially El Paso, which killed 31 people.

A year ago, Toni Morrisson even said in a show on France 5 : " It is out of the question that I die while Donald Trump is still in power. I will survive him. "

" National Treasure "

After his death, reactions multiply, but only among Democrats. Bernie Sanders regretted the loss of an " American legend ". Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi also expressed her emotion, as did Bill and Hillary Clinton. For Barack Obama, it's " a national treasure " that went away.

Toni Morrison was a national treasure, as good as a storyteller, as captivating, in person as she was on the page. Her writing was a beautiful, meaningful challenge to our conscience and our moral imagination. What a gift to breathe the same air, if only for a while. pic.twitter.com/JG7Jgu4p9t

Close to the Democrats, Oprah Winfrey said that " Toni Morrison was our conscience, our visionary, the one who reveals the truth ". A tribute also given by Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, two women elected by Donald Trump had invited them to return to their country.

Toni Morrison will be remembered as one of the greatest thinkers and storytellers in our history.

She gave us all the best, and her work continues. Thank you, Toni Morrison. https://t.co/XEDGNS7OXW
