Jammu and Kashmir have been divided between India and Pakistan since the countries became independent from the UK in 1947. Article 370 means that Kashmir, among other things, may have its own flag and exercise self-government in all matters except foreign policy and defense matters.

Two wars have been fought over Kashmir

But now Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah has informed the country's parliament that President Ram Nath Kovind has signed a decree repealing Article 370, the BBC reports.

How the message will be received is unclear - but it has been troubled in Kashmir since 1947. Two wars have been fought in the area and insurgents are still active. The protests in Parliament from the opposition have been loud, the BBC writes.

Political leader placed under house arrest

The decision will take effect immediately, and India has at the same time issued a ban on public place meetings.

The former leader of the region, Mehbooba Mufti, has been placed under house arrest and restrictions on internet use have been introduced.
