Germany warned of the effects of US sanctions on EU energy

2019-08-07T10:36:44.379Z

German business warned of the dangers of possible US sanctions regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project; restrictive measures could turn the EU’s energy policy into a US toy.

This writes Die Welt with reference to the head of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy Wolfgang Buechel.

“Recent US sanctions projects will harm enterprises from such friendly countries as Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. They will also turn European energy policy into a toy for the United States, ”he said.

He noted that there will be an “inevitable split” between the EU and the USA, and great damage will be done to both sides.

“European energy issues are the business of the Europeans, and they will remain,” Buchele emphasized.

In his opinion, the possible imposition of US sanctions could also complicate negotiations between the EU, Russia and Ukraine on a new transit agreement.

In late July, the Senate Committee of the US Congress voted in favor of sanctions against companies and individuals involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2.

As noted in the Russian Foreign Ministry, this bill is a new round of Russophobia.

Political scientist Eugene Rumer pointed out that these sanctions, if imposed, will have the opposite effect and will negatively affect relations with Germany.
