06 August 2019 Beijing warns Hong Kong protesters not to underestimate "the immense strength of the central government". He said this at a press conference held in the Chinese capital, Yang Guang, spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council (Hkmao), the largest government body regarding policies relating to the former British colony.

The official, flanked by his colleague Xu Luying, warned that "he who plays with fire perishes in the flames". And he explained that the arrival of punishment for those behind the violent protests is only "a matter of time". The warning comes the day after the general strike that paralyzed the former British colony.

The press briefing is the second that the HKMAO has ever held since Hong Kong returned under Chinese sovereignty in 1997.
