In Algeria, a new twist in the political crisis. National television announced in the middle of the day that an international arrest warrant had been issued against former Chief of Staff and former Defense Minister Khaled Nezzar. He is prosecuted by the military court for conspiracy and breach of public order. He is the third top security official to be prosecuted for the same charges.

As Said Bouteflika, the brother of the former president, like Mohamed Mediene and Athmane Tartag the former intelligence officials, Khaled Nezzar is being prosecuted for "conspiracy to undermine the authority of the command of a military training But also "undermining the authority of the state". Like them, he is liable to life imprisonment.

The former Minister of Defense and former Chief of Staff is in Spain. The military court has therefore issued an international arrest warrant.

Pursued in Switzerland for "war crime"

Khaled Nezzar was one of the strongmen of the Algerian army from the late 80s to the early 90s. He is being sued by the Swiss courts for "war crime", accused of using torture in large scale.

But with this arrest warrant, the former minister seems to pay for his closeness to the Bouteflika family, his meetings with Saïd Bouteflika when the protest movement began, as well as his critics, in recent weeks, against the head of Staff Ahmed Gaïd Salah.
