05 August 2019A Hong Kong new day of protests and public transport are in chaos. The strike convened on the Internet by workers in some twenty sectors has stopped various subway lines and caused delays and cancellations of flights. And it is shaping up to be another day of high tension in the former British colony that for the past two months has experienced the worst political crisis since it was returned from the United Kingdom to China.

Eight subway lines have stopped working totally or partially, and among these the line that connects the megalopolis with the airport, where at 10.00 local time (06.00 in Italy) 230 flights had already been canceled while dozens of others had suffered long delays. With thousands of passengers on the platforms since the early hours of the morning, the government has asked companies to be "comprehensive": "For employees who cannot get to work on time due to traffic conditions and public transport services , employers should show the necessary understanding due to the circumstances, "said a spokesman for the Ministry of Labor.

Thousands of people joined the strike and a government source confirmed that many employees had asked for Monday as a day of leave or sick leave.

For his part, the chief executive of Hong Kong, governor Carrie Lam, appeared alongside the executive's men in front of the press, and gave a speech in which he repeated the government's position but also warned that the protests of those who ask to "release" Hong Kong put the city in a "very dangerous" situation and risk bringing it to destruction. The governor also reiterated her intention to remain in office and, in the face of criticism for police brutality, asked to understand the "tremendous pressure" to which the security forces have been subjected for nine weeks.
