According to an Ifop poll for the Sunday newspaper, 68% of French people judge the police "effective", when 29% believe the opposite.

When we talk to them about the police, the word that comes spontaneously to one in two (50%) French is "trust". Nearly seven in ten (68%) say it's "effective", according to an Ifop * survey conducted for the JDD on Sunday.

A rating up since 2012

The figure has risen sharply since 2012. At the time, only 50% (-18) of the respondents considered the action of the police in a positive way. Nearly one in three French people (29%), however, replied that the police are "not efficient".

The police have been the subject of several controversies in recent months, including the use of launchers of defense balls (LBD) and other grenades deencclement, during the many demonstrations of "yellow vests" . Some 1,700 demonstrators also denounced, Saturday in Nantes, the police violence and the death of Steve Maia Caniço, found Monday in the Loire. The 24-year-old had disappeared in the night of 21 to 22 June during the Fête de la musique, while attending a concert on the banks of the Loire, where police forces had intervened.

* The survey was conducted among a sample of 1,005 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
