London (AP) - After the retirement of Leroy Sané, Manchester City won the English Super Cup. The Premier League champion prevailed 5: 4 on penalties in a turbulent encounter against Jürgen Klopps FC Liverpool at London's Wembley Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus scored the decisive goal for the team of coach Pep Guardiola. Earlier, Manchester goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had parried the attempt by Georginio Wijnaldum. In the regular season, Raheem Sterling (12th minute) had met City and substitute Joel Matip (77th minute) for Liverpool.

Shortly before Sterling's goal Sané had left the place hobbling. Gabriel Jesus came into play for him. An exact diagnosis for the football national player courted by FC Bayern München was still pending for the time being. The 23-year-old had come down the running duel with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Next Friday, the Premier League will start the new season with the duel between Champions League winner Liverpool and promoted Norwich City. Manchester City joins West Ham United a day later.
