“The Secretary-General expresses deep regret over the termination of the INF Committee,” the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Stefan Dusarrik, said in a statement.

According to Dujarric, Guterres constantly urged Moscow and Washington to resolve their differences through the consultation mechanisms provided for by the INF.

"The Secretary-General emphasizes the need to avoid destabilizing events and urgently seek agreement on a new common path of international arms control," the report said.

Earlier, Guterres called on Moscow and Washington to extend the Treaty on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START III).

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the exit of the United States from the INF Treaty a serious mistake.
