The former Prime Minister of Benin Lionel Zinsou was sentenced on Friday, August 2 by his country's justice to 5 years of ineligibility and six months in prison suspended for exceeding election campaign expenses and use of false attestation.
The former head of the Beninese government has two weeks to appeal his sentence to five years of ineligibility and six months in prison suspended for exceeding election campaign expenses and use of false attestation. If his sentence is confirmed, it will be excluded from the municipal of 2020 and especially to the presidential election of 2021. On RFI, Lionel Zinsou said he was not surprised by this conviction. He is the Africa Guest of RFI this Saturday, August 3rd.
I was warned six months in advance that after the unopposed legislative elections, a presidential election was to be held in Benin in 2021 without opposition. So I knew the decision well before the deliberation and the hearing because the executive power had made me warn: 'Do not draw plan on the comet, you will be ineligible'.
