Four protesters were killed on Thursday (August 1st) in Sudan, as thousands of people rallied across the country against the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators and sponsors of the killings of protesters.

According to the doctors' committee, linked to the protest movement, four protesters were shot dead at a rally in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum. Several others were injured.

The shootings occurred as thousands of protesters gathered in all states to demand "just punishment" for those who ordered shooting at the crowd on Monday (July 29th) in El Obeid , state of North Kordofan. The live ammunition had killed eight people, including four students, and more than 60 injured during a demonstration.

The ruling junta tried to clear its way by announcing on Thursday that it had arrested seven people, members of the Rapid Support Forces (FSR) who allegedly acted on their own. The Military Council claimed that they were guards of a bank located on the route of the demonstration.

But according to the videos and photos broadcast at the time of the attack, it would be snipers armed with machine guns that targeted the protesters in the heart and head. Witnesses claim that the snipers of the FSR had taken up positions on the roof of this bank just before the start of the march.

The political situation is still blocked after several postponements of the meeting between the Transitional Military Council (TNC) and the coalition of forces for freedom and change. The military council announced a meeting Thursday night with the opposition, but several parties announced that they would sulk until the violence against protesters has stopped and those responsible have not been brought to justice.

Since the military junta took power on April 11, 242 protesters have been killed in Sudan, according to the Central Committee of Doctors, four times more than the number of people killed between December and April, when President Omar el- Bashir was still in power.
