TIME ONLINE | News, backgrounds and debates
The Hague (dpa) - Burkas and Facial Veils are now banned in public places in the Netherlands. After 14 years of heated debate, the law on the "ban on face-covering clothing" came into effect. The Dutch right-wing populist Geert Wilders spoke of a "historic day". That was the first anti-Islam measure. In the Netherlands, which has a population of 17 million, there are an estimated 150 women who regularly wear a burka or a nikab.
