Authorities confirm the death of the second Ebola patient in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Goma). The first case appeared in mid-July in the capital of North Kivu, megolopolis of two million inhabitants. The emergence of this first case led to the establishment by the World Health Organization of a public health emergency of international concern. The authorities assure that everything is done to vaccinate all those with whom it could have come into contact.

This second person contaminated by Ebola is a man. He was followed since July 22nd. It is a gold digger from the village of Mongbwalu in Ituri, more than 600 km north of Goma. He arrived in the big city of eastern DRC on July 13 for a family visit.

According to Giscard Kusema, the deputy director of the Congolese presidential press, the patient remained under continuous medical surveillance until July 30, this Tuesday, when the authorities confirmed that he had Ebola.

This source close to the presidency indicates that a vaccination campaign began Wednesday morning in Goma for all people who have been in contact with this man, to prevent transmission of the disease.

Travel under surveillance

Planes and boats from Goma are tightly controlled. The Directorate General of Migration confirmed this Wednesday morning, July 31, a woman who had contact with the patient embarked last night at 18h on a boat to Bukavu.

The boats coming from Goma were briefly forbidden to dock this morning in Bukavu and quarantined, the time to put in place a suitable sanitary response. Since then, each person is identified, controlled and examined (temperature rise) during his disembarkation.

The authorities assure that this second deceased patient has no connection with the first case identified in Goma two weeks ago. It was a pastor from Butembo.
