Météo France has placed 59 departments in orange alert face the new wave of heat that falls from Tuesday on the Hexagon. Due to the drought that accompanies it, 73 departments are already affected by water restrictions.

The differentiated traffic is set up Tuesday in Paris and Lyon in particular, while the heat wave is back in France until Friday and that 59 departments are in orange alert for this new wave of heat. This alternating circulation is implemented to fight against pollution peaks related to the new heat wave episode.

In addition measures for the most vulnerable are taken in Paris or Toulouse, aid unblocked for the agricultural world and railways are closely monitored: the Hexagon is in order of battle. The 59 departments in orange vigilance are generally located in a large southern half of the country, with the exception of the Mediterranean coast, as well as in the Center, as far as Île-de-France and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. .

"A remarkable drought"

Heat waves are already more frequent in France, expected to multiply and intensify under the effect of global warming caused by human activities. In total, 73 departments are already affected by water restrictions. "The episode of heat wave [...] will accentuate the drying of shallow soils in the coming days," warns Météo-France, while many regions are already experiencing a "marked rainfall deficit" for a year.

The forecasting agency says that there is "a remarkable drought since the beginning of the summer weather in the north of the country", and that "many cities are experiencing their drier summer beginning since the beginning of the measures" like Tours, Melun, Romorantin, Orleans, Rouen and Nantes, among others. To help farmers deal with this drought, the government will request the advance payment of a portion of European aid, a cash advance of one billion euros.

In Loire-Atlantique, the prefecture raised Monday the alert threshold of the department, affected by the drought that leads the Loire basin to an "extremely low".

Short but intense heat wave

"Tuesday the minimum will most often be between 20 and 25 degrees, while the maximum will range between 37 and 41. A few spikes at 42 or 43 degrees can be observed in some places," warns Météo-France. Forecasters expect to see the record of heat beat Paris Thursday with 41 ° C. "We have a short heat wave, which is rather good news, because the longer it takes the more the organisms get tired and the more it becomes painful, especially for the most vulnerable", commented Météo-France forecaster François Jobard . But she will be "remarkably intense".

The meteorological episode will boost electricity consumption in France this week, but the production will be sufficient, said Monday RTE, the manager of the high voltage network. "A potential peak consumption" is expected Thursday at 13 hours with 59,000 megawatts, 8% more than normal temperatures in season. In periods of heat wave, electricity consumption increases especially with the increased use of air conditioners and fans.
