According to Mogherini, Amano served the IAEA with unwavering devotion, under his leadership the agency achieved concrete results.

The diplomat also expressed condolences to the family of the head of the organization on behalf of the EU.

Earlier it was reported that Amano, who headed the agency in 2009, died at the 73rd year of life.

Subsequently, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences in connection with the incident.
