Lisbon (AP) - About 1,000 firefighters continue fighting in the center of Portugal against devastating forest fires. Although the fires around 200 kilometers northeast of Lisbon would have eased somewhat, several villages were still in danger. The newspaper "Público" cites civil defense. The firefighting squads, which are in use with more than 300 vehicles, fight against two fire fronts, it said. High temperatures of up to 40 degrees, low humidity and strong winds made the extinguishing work more difficult. At least eight people were injured over the weekend and several houses were destroyed.
