First official visit to Washington for Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. He is scheduled to meet on Monday, US President Donald Trump.

On the menu of this first three-day official visit and first meeting between the two leaders: security and the economy. The talks are expected to be difficult as relations between Washington and Islamabad are at their lowest.

There are signs that do not deceive and that show how much the relations between the United States and Pakistan are degraded. The images, mostly taken by the Indian media, show Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan landing at the Washington airport aboard a Qatar Airways commercial plane.

No US official to welcome him, no red carpet, or even official vehicle. This first official trip to the United States since coming to power almost a year ago is no doubt a humiliation for the former cricket star.

Restore confidence between the two countries

One of Imran Khan's main missions will be to restore trust with one of his closest former allies. The United States froze in January 2018 hundreds of millions of dollars of military aid accusing Islamabad of being a refuge for terrorists destabilizing Afghanistan. Imran Khan, for his part, said a meeting with the US president would be " a bitter pill to swallow ".

But today, both sides are multiplying the gestures of good will to appease their tumultuous relationship. Islamabad has arrested Hafiz Saeed , a prominent terrorist, accused of being the brain of the Mumbai bombings of 2008, according to New Delhi.

The White House is waiting for the support of Islamabad to end the war in Afghanistan. In return, Washington could offer its help to Pakistan to avoid bankruptcy.

" Pakistan is in a difficult economic situation, but it still keeps an asset : it is its geostrategic position " says Jean-Luc Racine, research director at the CNRS.
