Raking operation underway in eastern Kenya at the Somali border. Security forces are looking for Shebab terrorists to infiltrate Kenyan territory. Since Saturday, July 20, population movements would be limited while research continues.

According to the intelligence services, sebabs allegedly infiltrated Kenya in order to carry out attacks. According to residents, traffic around villages such as Ras Kamboni, Kiunga or Ishakani on both sides of the border would be limited. Some even speak of curfews imposed by Kenyan forces.

Shots and explosions would have been heard since Saturday, without anyone knowing their origin. According to witnesses, the Kenyan Defense Forces would ask residents not to leave their homes.

The operation may follow a series of incidents over the last two weeks, including the deposition of improvised explosive devices on the road, one of the favorite weapons of the shebabs.

On July 15, a shooting took place between suspected terrorists and the Kenyan Defennce Forces, killing three Islamists and two wounded soldiers.

This violence is regular in the region, especially since the intervention of Kenyan forces in Somalia launched in 2011. The border is very porous and the populations living on both sides of the border belong to the same ethnic groups. The forest zone straddling the two countries has long served as a landmark for shebabs to launch attacks.
